From VH1 Celebrity 9/11/12
Perks of Being a Wallflower star Ezra Miller was probably too busy jetting from the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles to the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend to notice that some of us — however reluctantly — had put him in our VMA Worst-Dressed list. But when VH1 Celebrity told him on the phone on Sunday that his outfit had been a “point of contention,” he smelled our BS all the way from Canada.
“Why don’t you just cut to the chase and tell me the honest opinion in the office about thecaballero suit. I don’t need watered-down tales of unfabricated opinions,” he challenged. Well, we admitted, we did say he looked like a long-lost member of the Black Crowes.
“Oh no, oh no, oh no! See, horrible misinterpretation!” he exclaimed, before describing the unusual suit’s provenance. “I got it from a spot in Los Angeles, which is called Golyester and I just walked in, saw it, and was like, ‘Oh, this is this the dopest thing I’ve ever seen. I’m definitely going to wear this tonight at the VMAs.’ And then these awesome two women who work at Golyester named Zoey and Rebecca sewed it into shape and sold it me for a bargain. And yeah that’s pretty much the story. As for inspiration, it was a pretty inspired piece to begin with, in my humble opinion.”
As he told us this story, we weren’t imagining Ezra the actor as much as Patrick, the sweet, adventurous, openly gay, Rocky Horror Picture Show fan he plays in Perks. That same defiant individuality shines through in both of them. “I was drawn to this character, because he’s self-determined and he’s self-aware and he stands on his own two feet and he maintains his own dignity and his own pride, despite the sort of troubling circumstances that surround him and all of these conditions that challenge him and sort of seek to potentially degrade him,” he told us. “I was drawn to the character who stood in the midst of that storm, with his integrity intact.”
And we imagine Patrick would celebrate his appearance on our Worst-Dressed list just as much as Ezra seemed to, making us love both actor and character all the more.
