Fact: The Netflix hit Orange Is the New Black is based on a memoir of the same name, byPiper Kerman, on whom Taylor Schilling’s character Piper Chapman is based. Fact: Piper Kerman is married to writer Larry Smith. Fiction: This is a spoiler for the show’s love triangle. Or maybe it is. On the red carpet of their PaleyFest: Made in New York panel last week, we asked show creator Jenji Kohan and stars Schilling, Jason Biggs and Natasha Lyonne whether they’re Team Alex or Team Larry — in the time honored tradition of reducing complex relationships to sports analogies.
“I leave that [choice] to much more capable minds than my own: Jenji Kohan,” Schilling said of her allegiance to Piper’s ex-girlfriend and fellow inmate Alex (Laura Prepon) and her fiance, Larry (Biggs). “For me to personally reflect on this character I’m playing… I try not to. I don’t know.”
Kohan was giving nothing away. Especially not after fans have been up in arms about the news that Prepon has a significantly reduced role in season 2. “I think very early on we departed from the book,” she said. “But never say never.”
“Liberties are being taken for the sake of storytelling,” Biggs told VH1 about the memoir versus the show. “But I’m holding on to that little nugget that the real life Piper and Larry are together in the end. So maybe just maybe.
“Team Alex, listen, I get Team Alex,” he added. “Alex has nicer boobs than Larry, let’s be honest. That right there is reason alone.”
So, which team is Biggs’ friend Natasha on?
“I don’t really know what this is!” she said. “What is this? This is like a young people question.”
