You know that empty, depressed feeling you get when you finish a really good book? Sometimes, it’s almost as if your best friend moved to another town on the same day your boyfriend dumped you. Other times, it’s just the dull ache of hunger for the next new thing. Of course, some die-hard Twilighters solve this problem by rereading the entire series for the 100th time. But I’m here to tell you that Edward Cullen does not have to be your only brand of literary heroin.
That’s why we’re launching the Book Report here on Hollywood Crush, dedicated to the many, many young adult novels that are equally worthy of our obsession. And it’s not just me and the publishers who think so; many of these are about to be made into movies and TV shows too. As much as we love crushing on Nate Archibald and Jacob Black, our screens have room for a few more dashing heroes and adorable boys next door (and the hot young stars portraying them). And as much as we identify with Bella, Hermoine and Norah, there’s no reason we don’t want to add to our group of fictional friends.
In the coming weeks, I’ll bring you the latest news on books that are being adapted and make this a place to discuss the novels that we’re dying to see on the screen one day.
I’m going to start Book Report with the next logical step after “Twilight”: L.J. Smith’s“Vampire Diaries.” The first four books of this series were published back in the early ’90s, before this latest bloodsucking craze. And in the wake of vamp mania, Smith just published a fifth installment in February. It’s about high school senior Elena, who falls in love with Stefan, a handsome student from Italy (and, you guessed it, a vampire), but is also drawn to his dangerous brother, Damon. The series based on “Diaries” airs on the CW this fall (and stars the delicious Ian Somerhalder), so if you haven’t read the books yet, you still have time to get a jump on it.
If you’re like me, you will probably finish all five books in a few days. But try at least the first, “The Awakening,” and come back here next week to share your thoughts about it, how it compares to “Twilight,” and what you think the TV show will be like.
